LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading, Writing, & Spelling
In Language Arts, your child navigates through the 4th grade curriculum using a variety of resources and experiences. Our guiding principle is the Daily 3 -consisting of Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and Spelling.
We begin each day with Cursive Practice for morning work. Mentor Sentences provide our grammar focus as we learn from masters in the craft of writing. We have a grammar workbook called SuperWriters, which provides on-going practice. Our school uses Lucy Calkins Units of Study for both Reading and Writing Workshop. We build on skills learned in 3rd grade to grow as writers. Your child is encouraged to experiment with language and strengthen his/her writer's voice. StoryWorks is another valuable resource that supports our reading program with high-interest magazines and activities.
Reading quality literature is paramount for 4th graders. In class we use a variety of mentor texts ranging from picture books to chapter books. At home your child is expected to read 30+ minutes each night from a book on his/her level. We track reading using GENRE BINGO Cards. Your child will be asked to complete five books per quarter. Please monitor this weekly and verify completed books with your signature. In addition, students post in eClass about their reading progress along with other topics.
Lastly, we have biweekly Spelling lists consisting of high-frequency words, along with Greek & Latin Root challenge words. Classwork is organized on a Matrix where students complete various assignments for independent practice. Small group and individual instruction is also a crucial component to our workshop model in both reading and writing.
Fourth grade is a demanding year, but also a fun year of learning and growth in independence. Organization will be your child's best friend and we are here to help. Please know communication is appreciated if questions arise.
